Elisabetta Carfagna

Full professor of statistics at the University of Bologna, elected Council Members of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) (2025-2029), Chair of the (ISI) Special Interest Group on Data Science, elected Council member of the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS), and member of the ISI Committee on Agricultural Statistics, she started her academic career after having reached, at the age of 28, a managerial position in the R&D department “Remote sensing and geographic information systems” of a leading Italian company. She has led and participated in research projects in collaboration with European and UN organizations and national institutions, among which FAO, EUROSTAT, JRC, UNECE, USDA, Chinese Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Ethiopian CSO, Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Istat. She has contributed to design and start-up the implementation of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics, a joint initiative promoted by UN agencies. She was Coordinator of the Sample Survey Group of the Italian Statistical Society (2015-2017) and board member of the European Master in Official Statistics (2018-2020). Her main research topics are data science, sample survey design, use of geospatial information and administrative data for agricultural, rural, agri-environmental, and environmental monitoring.
